Striker Henry Meja struck a brace to take his tally for the season to eight goals as Tusker FC cemented their hold on top of the BetKing Premier League standings with an assured display in a 4-1 win over Posta Rangers at the Kasarani Annex on Thursday.
Meja scored in either half as the brewers ran out winners to move to 29 points on top of the standings after 12 matches, four ahead of KCB who have played two less.
After an opening half hour where Tusker dominated, the brewers broke the deadlock when Jackson Macharia fired home after 38 minutes. The dreadlocked forward fired home after the Posta defenders failed to clear a cross from Luke Namanda.
Just before that, Macharia had missed a sitter, his connection off a Meja cross going just wide. Meja had a goal disallowed for offside when he reacted quickest to a spilled ball but the referee whistled for an offside.
Posta drew level almost immediately Macharia had scored, a mix up in the backline gifting Ezekiel Okare an opportunity to bang in the equalizer.
But Tusker kept their fight up and were 2-1 up at the stroke of halftime when Meja scored the first of his two when he robbed the Posta backline of the ball before neatly tucking the ball in beyond keeper Bryne Omondi.
Upon resumption, Robert Matano’s charges continued to roar with Macharia coming close to his second but his shot on the outer foot went wide.
Skipper Hashim Sempala had to make a timely goalline clearance in the 63rd minute as Posta threatened from an Okare header.
But three minutes on the turn, the game was heading to safety when Namanda picked up a greatly delivered ball from keeper Michael Wanjala before lobbing over the advancing keeper for goal number three.
Eight minutes to time, the game was done and sealed when Meja completed his second with a beautiful goal, gliding past the keeper before slapping the ball into an empty net. It would have almost been five when substitute Boniface Muchiri fired a rocket from range, but the effort came off the bar.
